Playing through the Pune monsoon

3 min read · 19 September 2026

The monsoon is where most people's sporting habit quietly dies. Not because they decide to stop, but because two sessions get rained off and the third is never booked.

Here is how to get through it.

What actually stops

Turf football and box cricket stop when the surface is genuinely unsafe rather than merely wet. Good turf drains, and playing in light rain is fine and rather enjoyable. Standing water is where ankles go.

Outdoor courts stop entirely. Wet court surfaces are dangerous in a way wet turf is not — the grip changes without warning.

What carries on

Badminton, table tennis and pickleball, if the courts are indoors. The monsoon is the busiest badminton season in most Indian cities for exactly this reason.

Swimming, obviously, and it is the most underrated monsoon sport. Nobody minds the rain when they are already wet.

The humidity problem

Indoor courts in the monsoon are humid, and humidity changes two things.

Shuttles slow down. Damp feathers fly shorter. If your clears suddenly stop reaching the back line in July, the shuttle is the reason, not your arm. Play a faster grade.

Floors get slippery from condensation, not from rain. Wipe the soles of your shoes before you step on, and again after any break. This is the single most common monsoon injury cause and it takes four seconds to prevent.

Keeping the habit

Switch sport rather than stop. If your football group is rained off for a month, that month is the time to try badminton. The habit survives; only the sport changes.

Book indoors for the whole season. A recurring indoor slot from June to September removes the weekly decision, and the weekly decision is what kills the habit.

Move earlier. Mornings are more reliable than evenings during the monsoon, and less crowded.

Getting there

The genuine obstacle is not the rain, it is the traffic in the rain. A venue twenty minutes away in February is forty-five minutes away in July.

Pick the closest venue for monsoon months even if it is not your usual one. A sport you can reach is better than a sport you prefer.

KGB runs indoor and covered options across its venues, all on the same flat rate, so switching sports or venues costs nothing.
